LEGACY CONCERT at the Presbyterian Church of Wyoming (and Connections!)
Sunday November 17, 2019 was the Legacy Concert celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 3/37 Schantz Pipe Organ at The Presbyterian Church of Wyoming, (Cincinnati) Ohio. My long history with this church began in 1973 when I traveled monthly from Huntington, WV to begin study with Dr. David Mulbury, then organist at the Wyoming Church. The organ was a wonderful treat and a gem to study all styles of music. I moved to Cincinnati, in 1975 to study at the College-Conservatory of Music and won the audition to become the organist at Wyoming, serving with Ed Roman, Director of Music for two years. I enjoyed working with Transitional Pastor Lou Gishler, Associate Herb Bates and then Senior Pastor Paul Miller.
It is fascinating how connections are made! While at Wyoming I met members Barb and Terry Marty who owned the Springdale Music Palace and later in 1983 become one of the three organists there (with Karl Cole and Dave Weingartner) on the Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ for ten years until the tragic fire destroyed the console and damaged the organ resulting in closure. It was the dream of a lifetime!
We played all types of music for our guests of all ages! All three organists “got along” great and supported each other in our efforts. One of the favorites were our TRIOS on holidays where we all three appeared playing the Mighty Wurlitzer, the Wurlitzer Grand Piano, and “guest digital organs” temporarily installed by Jerry Dulski from Baldwin and Rodgers. We also enjoyed guest artists such as “The Swing Sister” a vocal trio popular in the 80’s and 90’s featuring music of the Andrews and McGuire Sisters.
Last nite I so enjoyed seeing friends from the church and other organists I’ve known since CCM days including Dr. David Mulbury, Debbie (Donat) Panell, Karen Balough, John Deaver, Matt Manwarren, Bill Seale (who I have accompanied at weddings). Thanks to all the folks at The Presbyterian Church of Wyoming for planning and hosting this event, and making memories for many happen yesterday!
